Although published as a novella, this is really a short story. I’ll read anything by Stephen King and this is no exception. The story is straightforward with all the classic King hallmarks of excellent foreshadowing, a little hint of creepiness right from the get-go, and superb characterizations. The real magic of this story is the complete immersion in baseball lingo. Narrated as though an old-timer is telling King himself the tale, the language is absolutely spot on from word to word. If my dad and brother weren’t such baseball fanatics themselves I would not have understand half the phrases the narrator uses, but luckily for those who don’t understand baseball lingo those passages are not essential to the plot. For baseball fans, however, and King fans, this is the perfect summertime treat.
